Government proposes amendments to certain mandatory waiting periods

The Government is proposing a legislative amendment that would extend certain mandatory waiting periods related to earnings-related allowance. The proposed changes would apply to waiting periods imposed by the employment authority due to non-compliance with jobseeking obligations or failure to participate in employment services.

Under the proposed legislation, a jobseeker would lose their entitlement to earnings-related allowance already after the first instance of non-compliance. In such cases, the mandatory waiting period would be seven calendar days.

Following a second instance of non-compliance, the jobseeker could lose their entitlement to the allowance until further notice. Entitlement would be reinstated only after six weeks of employment. At present, entitlement is only lost until further notice after the fourth instance of non-compliance, and it is reinstated only after 12 weeks of employment.

The aim of the amendment is to emphasise the jobseeker’s responsibility to actively seek work and participate in the services offered to them.

No changes are proposed to mandatory waiting periods that are unrelated to jobseeking or participation in employment services.
